Police and Corrections join forces for training
The training event was designed and co-ordinated by Adviser Tactical Operations Raana Walker and Rimutaka Unit Commander Takayawa Kolinisau and supported by Police Commander Cameron Browne.
“ACR team training offers a great opportunity for both Police and Corrections teams to share knowledge of their work, controlling and containing challenging situations,” says Raana. “By sharing experiences from their relevant environments, they can be more prepared for any future emergency joint operations.”
Working in partnership with external agencies and building relationships is key to building situational awareness in any response.
Training was attended by 21 police officers from the Wellington Central PSU (Police Support Unit), observers from Military Police and 35 Corrections ACR members from Wellington, Manawatū and Hawke's Bay prisons says Tactical Operations Adviser Raana Walker.
The day began with some training where the prison team ran through baton and shield drills and competitions with section drills to challenge each other. A joint exercise was held in the afternoon.
“ACR is one of the fundamental tools we use to deal with serious incidents in prisons. Working in partnership with external agencies and building relationships is key to building situational awareness in any response.”
Cameron Browne says the training was invaluable in terms of building capability across the two agencies. “The work that Raana and unit commanders from Rimutaka and Manawatū have done is outstanding and continues to place everyone in good stead going forward,” says Cameron. “The partnership between Corrections and Police continues to strengthen with the sharing of ideas, knowledge, and operational skills.”
